- Teacher neutrality op-ed template – One significant concern this school year is the potential for political discourse in the classroom that does not leave space for students of varied viewpoints to confidently express their ideas and beliefs. When the classroom setting does not allow for civil discussion of various viewpoints, certain students will naturally self-censor, and withdraw from important discussions that could otherwise foster a greater understanding of the topics at hand. At FAIR, we want to encourage teachers to approach controversial and political topics in a neutral manner that encourages open, respectful dialogue in the classroom. To that end, we will be launching an education campaign to raise awareness about the benefits of teacher neutrality. One part of that campaign will be submitting op-eds on this topic to local newspapers. You can use this template draft and tweak it to your liking and submit it to your local news outlets for publication. We hope the publication of op-eds on this topic will drive constructive dialogue among educational leaders and community members writ large.
