Some schools are now instructing teachers to withhold information (and in some cases even lie to parents) if their child uses a different name or gender at school than at home. Under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), parents have a right to review their child’s school records.

Under this Federal law any institution/school that receives federal funding must respond within 45 days of a request by parents to inspect their child’s records.
