When thinking about controversial issues in a nuanced way, many of us tend to think that the best answer is some combination of the points made by either side of the issue.

Faces of X, created by FAIR in the Arts member Stephanie Lepp, is a series of short videos that integrate different perspectives on divisive social issues — like capitalism, gender, and race.

First, each video steel-mans different perspectives on the issue. (Steel-manning articulates the strongest version of a perspective, as opposed to straw-manning which articulates the weakest.) Then — in the triad of thesis, anti-thesis, and synthesis — each video attempts to integrate the steel-man perspectives into a synthesis view. A synthesis then becomes a new thesis in our evolving understanding of reality.

FAIR is happy to present this as an educational resource to help develop the skill to integrate diverse perspectives on an issue into a nuanced and whole view.
