Around the world, 27 million people are literally slaves who do not have the freedom to leave their employer. That’s equivalent to the entire working population of the U.K. The video below gives a brief snapshot of the situation of present-day slaves in rural Brazil. It was co-produced by Latin America’s Centre for Justice and International Law with WITNESS.

Brazil’s agricultural exports include cattle, cotton, pineapples, rice, sugarcane, timber and tobacco. A recent report on the country’s agricultural industry is available free on the Economist Intelligence Unit website. However, as you might expect, it makes no mention of this issue whatsoever.
